District Receives Grant for Water Stations

Skagit PUD will receive a grant from the state Department of Ecology to help pay for part of the cost of installing self-service water stations.

The $75,000 in funds, which come from Ecology's drought relief grants program, will allow the PUD to install automated bulk water filling stations in the Conway and Bow Hill areas in order to help customers whose wells are failing.

An increasing number of customers have had to truck water to their homes because of the recent drought. The water stations will provide a convenient alternative to filling their water tanks from fire hydrants.

There was a four-fold increase in the use of fire hydrant meters to fill water tanks during the drought, a practice that puts the PUD's water system at risk for contamination.

The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of December.
