During the dog days of summer, when water usage peaks and quality matters most, it's the perfect time to explain Skagit PUD's year-round water line flushing program. Throughout our 630-mile system, we continuously maintain your water quality through this essential process.
What is flushing? Think of it as a deep clean for your water pipes. Just like sediment settles in a slow-moving river, mineral particles and harmless microorganisms gradually accumulate in water pipes where water moves at just 1½ miles per hour. Our flushing process uses controlled water pressure through fire hydrants to scour out these materials, ensuring your water stays crystal clear and flows freely. We carefully monitor the process and neutralize chlorine in the discharged water.
Minimal disruption, maximum benefit. We schedule residential flushing between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, with advance notice via high-visibility neighborhood signboards. You may experience brief low pressure or slight discoloration — harmless silt that doesn't affect water safety. Simply run cold water taps for a minute or two to clear your home's pipes. During flushing, avoid using hot water to prevent sediment in your water heater, and hold off on washing whites to prevent potential staining.
Not waste, but essential maintenance. While flushing may appear to waste water, this process serves a vital purpose — maintaining system integrity and ensuring the highest quality water reaches your home. It's actually a beneficial use of water that protects our entire infrastructure and your health. Skagit PUD remains committed to water efficiency, continuously monitoring our program to use the least water possible while maintaining the highest standards.
