Skagit PUD's innovative energy recovery project at the 9th and Highland Reservoir was recognized by WaterWorld Magazine as one of its 2025 Top Projects. The project uses InPipe Energy's HydroXS micro-hydro technology to capture previously wasted pressure energy from our water system and convert it into clean electricity, generating approximately 300,000 kWh annually.
In partnership with Mount Vernon School District, the project powers EV charging stations at the high school and offsets the district's energy costs through a net metering arrangement with Puget Sound Energy. The system will prevent more than 9.3 million pounds of carbon emissions over its 30-year lifespan.
Funded through the Washington State Department of Commerce Clean Energy Fund, TransAlta's Coal Transition Fund, and federal Inflation Reduction Act incentives, the $1 million project was completed without impacting ratepayers.
WaterWorld Magazine's Top Projects Awards recognize drinking water projects demonstrating complexity, community impact, and innovation. Projects are judged on challenges overcome during design and construction, stakeholder collaboration, and innovative technology.
