Washington State Declares Drought Emergency

Post Date:04/09/2026 9:15 AM
The Washington State Department of Ecology has issued a statewide drought emergency declaration, citing an exceptionally warm winter that left mountain snowpack well below normal levels. Snowpack provides much of the state's summer water supply as it gradually melts into rivers and reservoirs. With statewide snowpack at roughly half of normal and above-average temperatures forecast through June, Ecology projects significant water shortfalls across the state this summer.

Skagit PUD customers should know that our water supply is in good shape heading into the season. The Judy Reservoir system, our primary water source, is at healthy levels, and we are continuing to top it off as we move into the drier months.

The Skagit River typically experiences seasonal low flows each summer. As in past years, Skagit PUD and the city of Anacortes will monitor river levels and notify customers if conditions require a conservation request.
